Potatoes in the Classroom
Welcome to Fueling for Fitness and Fun!

Since complex carbohydrates are the body's main energy source, powering everything from jogging to breathing, we have to ask ourselves: are we fuelling our children with the energy they need to keep up with busy school and activity schedules? The prevailing view of nutritionists and health professionals is that children need complex carbohydrates from foods such as potatoes as part of a balanced diet, essential to proper growth and learning.

The Kids and Carbs - Fueling for Fitness and Fun! initiative is part of the Power of the Potato program developed and funded by the Agriculture and Food Council of Alberta, participating Provincial Marketing Boards and Syngenta Crop Protection Canada, on behalf of Canada's potato farmers and their associates.

The collective mission is to educate consumers about the healthy benefits of consuming potatoes. The objective is to reinvigorate the potato's status as a versatile, Canadian-grown, easily prepared, inexpensive, "kid favourite" family food with a particular focus on the needs and benefits potatoes provide for growing children.

This section of our website provides informational programs and downloadable resources to educators that will serve to further build awareness and understanding of sustainable agriculture and food systems and the power of potatoes!
